With my 4 Step Method to Decluttering your Make-up....
Is Your Make-Up Bag Holding You Back?
Remember that feeling when you first bought that eyeshadow palette or that 'miracle' foundation?
Buying things from the TikTok shop. The excitement, the possibilities!
And by the time they arrive, you have forgotten why you ordered them, and how to use them! You end up with an overflowing makeup bag, feeling overwhelmed instead of inspired. And tend to use the same few products every day.
Having too many make-up items can make it difficult to find what you are looking for as you scrabble around looking for a specific item.
Today, I'm going to share with you how to sift through your makeup, sorting out what's good and what's not, using my 4 Step Method to Declutter your Make-up Bag.
How to Organise your Make-up, step-by-step
Trust me, this was a game-changer for me, and I know it can be for you too! It is something I still do regularly to ensure that my personal make-up collection still works for me.
4 Steps to Declutter Your Makeup and Simplify Your Routine
Gather ALL your makeup onto a protected surface.
Yes, even those 'just in case' items hiding in the back of your drawer!
Be ruthless!
Toss anything that's:
Broken
Old or Expired (I'll show you how to check this in a moment)
Never going to be used; a lipstick in a shade you really don't like, a product that you don't like the fragrance of etc
Please recycle where possible! Check out the John Lewis Beautycycle scheme, which offers £5 off make-up when returning 5 make-up empties (terms & conditions apply). Tesco and Superdrug also offer make-up recycling banks.
The Two-Pile System
Sort the survivors into:
a) 'Keep': Items you LOVE and feel great wearing.
b) 'The Jury's Out': Things you're unsure about but can't quite let go…yet.
The Final Cut
'Keep': Wipe these items clean and store similar products together e.g. all eyeshadows togeher, blushes, lipsticks etc.
'Jury's Out': Place these in a separate container. Give them one last chance to wow you! Set a date in your diary - if you haven't used it, chuck it.
Check this regularly and clear out items you never reach for.
Pro Tip: All make-up has an expiry date:
Look for this symbol on your products.
This tells you how long the product lasts after opening. No symbol? It might be time to say goodbye!
Signs your make-up has expired:
Changes to texture/formulation
Different smell/taste (lipsticks)
Decluttering your make-up can be liberating!
I remember when my make-up bag was bursting at the seams. I had products for every occasion, many were hardly used. I spent ages scrabbling around my make-up collection to find one product - I couldn’t see the wood for the trees.
The process might feel overwhelming at first, but I promise it's worth it. By simplifying your make-up collection, you're not just organising products – you're making space for a new, confident you to shine through.
